At Chaddesley Corbett Endowed Primary School, we believe that geography is a vital subject that equips children with the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to make sense of the world around them. Through our carefully sequenced and ambitious geography curriculum, we aim to cultivate a deep appreciation for the diversity of our planet, an understanding of how human and physical processes shape the world, and the ability to think critically about global issues.
Our geography curriculum is designed to provide pupils with a deep and meaningful understanding of the world around them. We have chosen to use the Primary Knowledge Curriculum as the foundation for our geography teaching, as it aligns closely with the requirements of the National Curriculum and allows us to build a coherent, progressive, and engaging learning experience for our pupils.
The Primary Knowledge Curriculum's approach to teaching geography starts each year with 'spatial sense units' that explicitly teach children a range of mapping skills and locational knowledge. This ensures that pupils have a strong understanding of where locations are, which then allows them to add meaningful context to their place knowledge in other units. Over the course of their primary education, children study a broad range of places, including the UK, Europe, and the wider world, revisiting these locations repeatedly to build their knowledge over time. This sequencing of content also supports children's understanding of scale, as they encounter, local, national, European, and global geography each year. Additionally, key geographical concepts, such as place, diversity, interconnections, and the environment, are threaded throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to develop a deeper, more holistic understanding of the subject. By providing a structured and progressive geography curriculum that systematically builds children's knowledge and understanding of diverse locations and concepts, we can ensure that all children, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to develop a rich and nuanced appreciation of the world around them. The geography curriculum equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people and environments. Arming children with powerful knowledge about the world around them helps them to develop a love for the subject of geography, and also recognise their own role in becoming a responsible global citizen.
